None of these signs by themselves should be taken as a reason to panic, but if you’ve noticed several of them consistently, Jerry argues it may be time to explore the alternatives. What are they? There are various options, both public and private. In the U.S., for example, many public school systems have alternative programs. There are two general approaches:

Public Choice Programs: These are open to any student in the community and are sometimes called Schools Within Schools.

Public At-Risk Programs: These are for children who’ve had a variety of problems coping with school. Some of them are tailored to individual needs and are very supportive; some are more like holding centers and offer few benefits.
